Tips on Scanning Your Photos For A Quote

If you would like to scan your photo for a quote
the following tips may help.

These instructions are for low resolution scanning for quotation purposes and will produce a reasonably small file that can be attached to an email.

If you will be providing us with a high resolution scan for your restoration project instead of sending us your photo please use the instructions on "High Resolution Scanning Of Your Photo".

Low Resolution Scanning Instructions:

  1. Always clean the glass bed of your scanner with a non-streaking cleaner such as Windex® before you scan.

  2. With a can of compressed air (or by gently blowing) try to remove as much dust and dirt from the surface of your photo. Do not rub or scrub the photo, just use air.

  3. Make sure the glass cleaner on your scanner had dried and center the photograph in the center of your scanning bed.

  4. The scanning resolution (dpi/ppi) should be set to 150-300, your file size 100% and the color mode set to RGB.

There are several ways that you can save your scanned image. Here are a few recommendations

  • JPEG - Joint Photographic Experts Group (.JPG files, pronounced Jay Peg) This is a common image format. Be sure to set the compression to minimum of 75% in order to obtain the best results.
  • TIFF - Tag Image File Format (.TIF files) TIFF writes a very large file, and it does not use any compression.
